All About Us—Opus 2000

Opus 2000 has not always been the name of our chorus. For many years, and still in some circles, we are the Racine Sweet Adelines Chorus.

Many years ago, Jewel King, our founder and mentor decided that singing Barbershop Harmony would be fun. That was in 1948. She gathered some friends together to discuss the possibility; soon the Racine Chorus was founded. Opus 2000 is approaching 60 years of barbershop harmony and would love to have you join us as we sing into the future.

Although our "Jewel" is no longer with us, we honor her memory with an annual "JEWEL PARTY" to celebrate her and the chorus. It is a fun evening—Jewel enjoyed having fun while singing—that is what it is all about.

The Opus 2000 Chorus has won many honors for their performances. The chorus was the first to win an International Chorus Competition—in 1973. We continue to compete at our yearly Regional Competitions, scoring at a consistently high level. Competition is one way to keep the chorus at a high performance level.

The chorus holds an annual show and a cabaret. We have sung throughout the southeast Wisconsin area and have a great reputation in and around the Racine-Milwaukee area. We perform as often as we can—that is what we are all about—ENTERTAINING!

Our director, Jarmela Speta, has been with us for many years. She commutes weekly from Palatine, Illinois, where she lives and works as a Voice Instructor. Within Sweet Adelines, she has reached the highest levels of achievement in the Arranging, Judging and Faculty areas. She is a two time "Queen of Harmony" and has sung with many award-winning quartets. She is indeed skilled in the areas of teaching and performing Barbershop Harmony.

Becoming a member of our chorus immediately associates you with a chorus of tradition and quality. We are very proud of that.

Join us—you will be proud of Opus 2000 too!
